Come Out & Play

Hey all,

Last Friday (July 12th) was Come Out & Play After Dark, the night section of New York’s biggest public games festival. Hundreds of people turned out for the night’s games, including Studio Mercato’s own Don’t F**k Up for the Grasshopper table! The game was a big hit.

For Crystal Brawl, we’ve recently heard news that suggests we’ll be able to put it on the Ouya, our target platform. Hurray!

If you want to check out the game, come to the NYC gaming meetup on July 23rd. We’re demoing, and we’ll have a playable version available. Hope to see you there!

There’s also a chance Crystal Brawl will end up in an arcade cabinet at a Brooklyn DIY music venue. I’m talking with the guy on Tuesday. Gotta say, that would be pretty awesome.

Crystal Brawl is Coming

Fancy new screenshot! (It did not look like this in June.)

Announcing Crystal Brawl, a local multiplayer 2v2 battle-sport game. It’s a little like Hokra meets Gauntlet, if that means anything to you. If not, think of wizards and knights throwing a ball around in the woods. That works too.

The game’s a collaboration between myself, Jon Stokes, Ben Serviss, Chris Hernandez, and Rahil Patel, with sound by Nate Chambers. We’re developing it in Construct 2, probably for the Ouya. We’ve submitted it to IndieCade and the Boston Festival of Indie Games (the B-FIG) – I’ll post updates on those as we get them!

I’ve also submitted Nika to the B-FIG. A Nika iPad app by the Studio Mercato team may be on the horizon as well, once we finish our current project for the Grasshopper table.

Speaking of which, if you’d like to come in for a playtest at Grasshopper, let me know! They’ve been quite enjoyable and popular so far. We’ll also have the Grasshopper table at Come Out & Play After Dark on July 12th, so you can check it out then too. One way or another, hope to get you playing one of my games soon!

Grasshopper and Studio Mercato

Hey everyone,

As of last Monday, I am now a designer/producer at Grasshopper NYC! It’s a full-time position for the summer, and I may be able to stay on part-time once I start at NYU in the fall.

Grasshopper has been called “the most exciting thing in New York’s gaming industry right now” (approximate quote). The general idea is to make sophisticated gaming lounge spaces focused around a circular digital touch-table they have developed. If all goes well, we’ll open our first location this fall.

My job is to produce games for the table and run playtests. It’s a great project to be part of, and I had a blast my first week there. It’s gonna be a great summer…

…and YOU can be a part of it! I’ll be running playtests on the table all summer, ideally for groups of 3-4 people. We’re happy to have anyone, but we actually prefer non-gamers, so bring your non-gamer friends!

Our office is in west Soho. Weekday evenings are best, but we may be able to set up other times if that’s better for you. E-mail me (joshr2121@gmail.com) if you’re interested.

Really, we just want you to come in, play some cool games, and tell us how to improve your experience the next time. We will also give you beer. Free beer. Not making that up.

Also! Grasshopper will be at Come Out & Play After Dark, a free and public NYC games festival, on July 12th from 7 PM onward. Even if you don’t come into our office for a playtest, you should really go check that out, it’s awesome.

Otherwise, some game jam buddies and I are starting up Studio Mercato, a loose affiliation of… well, my game jam buddies and myself. It’s basically just a way to team up and showcase the games we’ve made both together and independently. We’ll have a website and stuff soon, it’ll be real professional. More news to come, I imagine.
